Note from the artist

For this painting I used Ichi’s soutai bluish black inkstick which uses genuine indigo.

It is the ink I use for most of my sumi-e paintings.

Great Egrets are found in Canada, though their population is relatively small and primarily found in the central Canadian provinces.

In this depiction the Great Egret has developed long, ornamental plums called aigrettes on back and wings, indicative of the mating season.

This can also be seen by the green colouration on the face.

The wind is blowing fiercely but the egret remains calm.

It is spring and time to find a mate.

The hanko I used here is my artist name “Spring Water” or “Shun Swee”
